Scope
This document covers the placement of regular and piggyback barcodes in print items.
Definitions
piggyback barcode
- A multi-use barcode label that can be applied to a surface then removed and reapplied to another surface. Piggyback barcodes have multiple liners.
- In Collection Services, piggyback barcodes may have "UNIV OF CA BERKELEY - SINGLE" printed at the top of the sheet and have a brown backing.
regular (single) barcode
- A single-use barcode label.
- In Collection Services, regular barcodes may have "UC BERKELEY - SINGLE ITEM" printed at the top of the sheet and have a white backing.
Barcode placement
Hardcover and pam bound books
If the book is hardbound or has a clear cover and blue pam hardbound back cover, use a REGULAR (SINGLE) barcode. Place the barcode on the inside back cover, horizontally, 1 inch down from the top and 1 inch from the outer edge, or slight variation to avoid covering text or functional image, diagram, map, etc.
Paperback books
If the book is paperback:
- for MAIN paperbacks:
- If the item is 3/8 inch thick or less, use a PIGGYBACK barcode and place on the title page verso horizontally anywhere on the page where it fits without covering information. If that is impossible, place it on the page facing the title page or the title page itself, as long as no information is covered.
- If the item is more than 3/8 inch thick, use a REGULAR (SINGLE) barcode and place on the inside back cover, horizontally, approximately 1 inch down from the top and 1.5 inches from the outer edge.
- EXCEPTION: If the item has a flap in the back, use a PIGGYBACK barcode on the title page verso instead.
- for ALL SUBJECT SPECIALTY LIBRARY paperbacks:
- Regardless of thickness, ALWAYS use a PIGGYBACK barcode and place it on the title page verso horizontally anywhere on the page where it fits without covering information. If that is impossible, place it on the page facing the title page or the title page itself, as long as no information is covered.
