LAUC-B Fall Assembly Wednesday October 13, 2004 8:30-10:00 a.m. Morrison Library Handouts: Fall Assembly agenda Committee Reports I. Call to Order LAUC-B Chair Christina Tarr called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. and welcomed the membership II. Call for Additional Agenda Items None III. LAUC-B Committee Reports Barbara Glendenning, CAPA: The last review cycle saw a large number of librarians come up for career status and merit review, perhaps prompted by concerns about the budget and talks of layoffs. A significant number of dossiers were turned in after the deadline leading to problems in scheduling and further impeding the peer review process. Rita Evans, Research Committee: LAUC-B members are encouraged to submit research proposals for the University-wide Research Grants for Librarians program for 2004-2005. Please refer to the LAUC website for more information on these funds and other research resources for UC librarians. http://www.ucop.edu/lauc/committees/rpd/rescall04-05.html The website also includes samples of successful research proposals from previous years. The deadline for submissions is January 3, 2005. The LAUC-B Research Committee will be a hosting a Townsend Center Librarian Fellowship Q & A - Brown Bag Lunch, on November 17 from 12:15-1:30pm in 303 Doe. IV. Report from the Chair, Christina Tarr A. The LAUC Statewide Fall Assembly will be hosted by LAUC-B at UC Berkeley on November 4 at International House from 9:30-3:00. SOPAG will be meeting from 11:15-12:30. B. A list of retirement benefits for librarians as well as the procedures for obtaining emeritus status can now be found on the LAUC-B website: /emeritus.html C. In June CAPA held a Brown Bag Lunch to examine the peer review process. Some of the issues that came up among the attendees included : General anxiety about the process, which feels mysterious to some Training is needed for review initiators, who themselves are unsure of the process Sample dossier could be made available on the LAUC-B website D. Principal investigator status for librarians E. Randy Brandt has been serving as the LAUC-B web manager since last fall and has been working hard to ensure that the site is up to date. Please notify Randy if you have content or design suggestions for the website. EXCOMM would like to assemble an ad hoc task force to advise him. If you have some knowledge of web design and would like to lend a hand, please contact Chris Tarr. V. Announcement Margaret Phillips announced that a Scholarly Publishing Symposium is to be held on March 31, 2005 at the Oakland Marriott City Center. This invitation-only event will include 250 members of the campus community including administrators, deans, faculty members, and representatives from the Library and LAUC-B. The goal of the symposium will be to foster campus-wide discussion about issues relating to scholarly communication. LAUC-B is a co-sponsor of this symposium. VI. Guest Speaker: Annalee Saxenian, Dean, UC Berkeley School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS) Chris Tarr introduced guest speaker Annalee Saxenian from the School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS). Saxenian was appointed Dean at SIMS in February 2004. Dean Saxenian discussed SIMS' approach to the organization and intersections of information and technology. SIMS' faculty, she explained are made up of social scientists, computer scientists, librarians, and engineers who come together to train students in information management. Saxenian opened the floor for questions and discussion. Questions were raised about internships for SIMS students in the Library, accreditation, and what role alumni of the UC Berkeley library school may play in the future. VII.
