Interviews
CAPA interviews all candidates for positions in the Librarian series to share information related to the Librarian review process and evaluate their potential for obtaining career status at Berkeley. Since November 1, 2020, CAPA has not conducted any interviews.
Job Descriptions
CAPA reviews position descriptions for openings in the Librarian series. Since November 1, 2020, CAPA has not reviewed any job descriptions.
Academic Review
CAPA has been meeting weekly since March to review 33 cases, including four for career status, two for promotion, and three for promotion and career status. We charged four ad hoc committees to review these nine cases and we want to thank the members profusely for their service and timely completion of their duties. CAPA plans to complete the review process for all cases by late May.
CAPA would like to thank Susan Swarts and the LHRD team for their incredible work this year bringing the dossier submission and review process entirely online.
Serving on CAPA and Ad Hoc Committees
CAPA is composed of your LAUC-B peers. If you would like to be considered for CAPA service in the future, let the current chair know, or register your interest in CAPA via the Nominating & Elections Committee’s LAUC-B volunteer form. Upcoming opportunities for service are ad hoc committees. This provides a glimpse of the review process from the reviewer’s perspective and is a good experience to build prior to CAPA service.
To serve on an ad hoc committee:
- You must already have career status
- You will be member of a team of 3 librarians and will review 1 to 3 career status/promotion cases
- Ad hoc appointments are made in January and the work is completed by the end of March
- If interested, contact the CAPA chair
To serve on CAPA:
- You must have career status
- You must hold the rank of Associate Librarian or Librarian
- It’s preferable if you have served on an ad hoc or two
- CAPA appointments are made in the late fall, after other LAUC-B committees and offices have been filled
- CAPA strives to balance librarian work experience with committee needs. If you have not been invited to serve on CAPA, keep on volunteering!

Recent activities:
The Committee on Affiliated Libraries Affairs hosted an Affiliated Libraries Fall Assembly on December 4th via Zoom. Members of multiple affiliated libraries spoke about adjustments to services during the pandemic and near-term plans for services when libraries would be reopening. There were also discussions about budget impacts of the pandemic as they relate to each library's mission.

LAUC-B Conference Committee
The LAUC-B Conference, “Reimagining Libraries Through Critical Library Practices,” will take place online on October 5-6, 2021.
The conference will use the Accelevents conferencing software in conjunction with Zoom.
The committee is currently working on choosing keynote speakers, drafting a call for proposals, discussing session formats, and starting to work on marketing and PR.

2021 Spring Report: LAUC-B Committee on Diversity

Recent activities:
Inspired by the Seminar for the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM) resolution titled, Collection Development in the time of COVID-19, the LAUC-B Committee on Diversity drafted the LAUC- B Resolution on the Importance of Diversity in Collections. This document details areas where the UC Berkeley Library can improve its efforts to build and provide access to collections that document and affirm diversity to help scholars work against racism and discrimination. The resolution was unanimously endorsed by the LAUC-B Executive Committee at the February 10, 2021 meeting.
The Committee on Diversity continues to hold monthly meetings for the Critical Librarianship Reading Group, a collaborative space designed to discuss critical librarianship readings, and recordings. The group is open to all including staff, student workers, and librarians. The following is a list of readings and dates completed in the spring semester:

This spring, the Committee on Diversity has revisited the Staff Mentorship program in an effort to strengthen and broaden the program. We solicited feedback from past mentors and are in the process of working on a communication plan to raise awareness of this valuable program.
Nominations and Elections Committee

The Nominating and Elections Committee has had an interesting and at times anxious year. As chair, I am personally grateful to all the committee members for keeping our work on track, thinking outside the box, and providing generous and helpful encouragement.
We updated the Google Form, LAUC-B Volunteer Form, and sent it out to LAUC-B membership in January and again in February in order to identify persons interested in serving on ExComm or other committees. In this year of extraordinary difficulties and pressures, the committee also sought other ways to solicit and encourage our fellow members to take on LAUC-B positions.
The slate for the election of next year’s Executive Committee is as follows:

Committee on Research and Professional Development
Report for 2021 Spring Assembly

Recent activities
- We received one application during the 2020 fall round of funding for LAUC statewide research and presentation grants, from LAUC-B member Jennifer Nelson. We reviewed the research grant proposal and submitted it before 11/25/20. It was successfully funded.
- The R&PD committee held a New Librarian Brown bag online event on Dec. 3, 2020. Salwa Ismail, Frank Ferko, and Ann Glusker shared their work and achievements and inspired an animated Q&A discussion.
- We received two LAUC statewide grant applications (Samantha Teplitzky, for presentation grant; Osman Celik, for mini-grant). We reviewed the proposals and submitted them before March 5, 2021. Both have been approved.
- The R&PD Committee is organizing two upcoming professional development sessions (with others in discussion):
- We are co-sponsoring an informal ACRL Recap/Debrief session with the Library Research Working Group on April 19 at 3:00pm.
- We have organized a workshop on April 22 from 1:00-2:00 pm about using your LAUC-B Professional Development Fund. The workshop will include presentations from Ramona C. Collins (Chair, LAUC-B), Celia Emmelhainz (LAUC-B Representative to the LAUC Statewide Research and Professional Development Committee), and Danielle Truppi (Financial Services Analyst, Library Business Services), as well as time for Q&A.
