Candidates for LAUC-B Offices
for Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect
Salwa Ismail
I am a librarian, an AUL for Digital Initiatives & Information Technology, and the Director of the Northern Regional Library Facility. I am humbled and honored to run for LAUC-B’s Vice Chair position. I started at UC Berkeley Library in June of 2019. Since my time at UC Berkeley, I’ve had the opportunity to work with, participate in, sponsor, or chair several Library committees, councils, and groups, which has given me the opportunity to get to know and work with many of my librarian colleagues across all the libraries. I’ve been a LAUC-B Nominating and Elections Committee member since 2022. And I’ve also been known to rarely miss a LAUC-B happy hour. I am also actively involved in UC systemwide library and campus groups, as well as other national and international library groups, especially ones that promote information interoperability through library standards, inclusion, and best practices. The perspective I have gained from my formal and informal conversations with my colleague librarians and my involvement in local library and campus committees and initiatives – as well as my involvement in other national and international committees – will help me in informing my role as Vice Chair/Chair-Elect as we collectively continue to advocate for, and advise on, professional and governance issues for UC Berkeley librarians, even in the face of numerous challenges, budgetary and otherwise. I am very passionate about our professional rights and how those rights can be used to inclusively promote and facilitate the full use of our professional abilities and the standards extended to us. Our Library is consistently ranked by ARL to be among some of the best research libraries, and despite the sometimes afflictive conversations and ongoing issues, we have opportunities to build on to continue in a strong position. I vehemently believe that LAUC-B’s advocacy can help us strive to remain in that strong position and can help us thrive. With a new incoming UL, this is also an excellent opportunity for LAUC-B to continue its strong advocacy for our profession and our librarians. I humbly feel that I have the correct set of skills to work as a team member of the LAUC-B executive committee to help that advocacy thrive and lay the groundwork to build a strong and positive working relationship for LAUC-B with the new University Librarian. If elected, it would be an honor and a delight to represent my profession and my librarian colleagues at UC Berkeley as the Vice Chair of LAUC-B.
for Secretary
Becky Miller
I’m honored to be considered for the position of LAUC-B Secretary. I’ve been the Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences Librarian in the Bioscience, Natural Resources & Public Health Library for the past ten years. I appreciate how LAUC-B brings us together from across the Library and valued my experience on the Committee for Professional Development and the Nominating and Elections Committee, and my participation in the staff mentorship program. I welcome this new opportunity to contribute to the Library community and will do my best to fulfill the Secretary duties accurately and in a timely manner.
for Library Representative
Jessica Tai
I am excited to be considered for the position of LAUC-B Library Representative. I am the Processing Archivist for Faculty Papers and Institutional Records at the Bancroft Library. Although I am relatively new to the library, I have already greatly benefited from LAUC-B professional support and connecting with colleagues through the mentorship program. I welcome the chance to work collaboratively with colleagues from across the library and look forward to supporting my fellow librarians as a LAUC-B Library Representative. Thank you for your consideration.
Nadia Winters
Thank you for considering me for the position of Library Representative to the LAUC-B Executive Committee. I am the Business Resource Librarian in the Social Sciences Division. While I am new to LAUC-B, I was a staff member here from 2019-2023, and have had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of library colleagues on inter-departmental teams including the Public Services Council, the E-Reserves team, the Licensing team, the Virtual Reference/LibChat team, and the Library Prize Committee. I am also a member of RUSA’s Business Reference Association and Services (BRASS) Membership Committee which seeks to increase engagement, support and a sense of belonging among librarians through networking opportunities as well as by building a fledgling mentorship program. I am honored by the opportunity to be more involved in LAUC-B’s governance and programs, and I will do my best to represent the evolving needs of our colleagues in this role.
for Affiliated Library Representative-Elect / CALA Vice Chair
Charlotte Daugherty
I look forward to serving as representative of the affiliated libraries on LAUC-B. I am new to UC Berkeley and to LAUC-B, having begun working at the Law Library as Foreign & Comparative Legal Research Librarian in August 2023. Over the past few months, I have worked with the statewide LAUC nominating committee to identify candidates who wish to run for a seat on the LAUC Executive Board. Closer to home, I look forward to working with other UCB librarians to discuss issues facing our campus libraries and to developing and promoting the value of the UC libraries to the wider university community.
