UC Berkeley’s Business Library has reopened after renovations. Here’s what has changed.

On the eastern edge of the UC Berkeley campus, a popular library is back in business.

The university’s Thomas J. Long Business Library reopened Monday, March 31, after a monthslong closure for renovations. The spruced-up space provides the campus community with modern, comfortable, and welcoming study spots, which are much-needed amid the closure of Moffitt Library.

Major upgrades to the Business Library, which had been closed since mid-October, include three new reservable study rooms — available to all UC Berkeley students — and a convenient information center with printers, scanners, and computers for business research, according to Cody Hennesy, the head of the UC Berkeley Library’s Social Sciences Division.

In the Business Library’s improved study spaces, new furniture allows for “all kinds of group and solo study,” Hennesy said. Like the space on the lower floor, the library’s study spots, located on the third floor, are available for as long as the building is open, even after library services close for the day.

The service desk is a gateway to the collections at UC Berkeley and beyond. At the library, students can access loanable technology, such as portable chargers and headphones, and get research help from friendly and knowledgeable librarians.

Other improvements include new carpets, eco-friendly lighting, and upgrades to the library’s data, electrical, security, and safety infrastructure.

The library’s inclusive and accessible design has “considerably brightened the public spaces,” Hennesy said.

“It’s great to reopen and we can’t wait to see the great work (students) do in the refreshed Long Business Library!” he said. “We’re excited to continue our close partnership with the Haas School of Business to meet evolving business research needs and to provide flexible study spaces for everyone on campus.”
