"Introduction to Data Analysis" series for engineers: outcomes & next steps - Anna Sackmann & Lisa NgoÂ
Anna and Lisa presented about a workshop series that was a collaboration between the Engineering Library and the Data Peers. The project began by identifying data analysis competencies then surveying College of Engineering student groups. Based on this feedback, they decided to try offering three workshops (via Zoom) this semester related to Python.Â
They worked with the Data Peers to design the workshops using the Carpentries Curriculum. Each of the first two workshops was taught by 2 Data Peer instructors with 3 helpers to help students in break-out rooms (the third workshop was taught by a vendor). The workshop used Jupyter Notebooks, materials were in GitHub, and people-counter data from UCB libraries were used as the sample data sets.
Registration was higher than expected, and attendance ended up being pretty good. Most workshop participants were from the College of Engineering since the advertising had been targeted to them. Feedback from participants was positive, including positive responses to the online learning environment.
Because of the success of the workshops and the relative ease of scaling them up by offering each workshop multiple times and/or recruiting more helpers, it was decided to expand the recruitment next time to all sciences students.
