Roundtable will be changing its meeting time, and it will no longer conflict with Sciences Council.
Fall instruction plans & coordination - All
A. Sackmann and S. Teplitzky have combined elements from the LaTeX workshop series into one extensive workshop, which will be offered three times this fall.
EPS librarians have created virtual Online Library Tutorials (vOLT) as a Jupyter Book, featuring avatars created by K. Greenland
A. Sackmann and L. Ngo are developing a Data Analysis Competencies series for undergrads, working with Data Peers to adopt the Software Carpentry curriculum on programming in MATLAB, data visualization in Python, version control with Git and using the command line
LHS librarians are prioritizing course-integrated instruction
M. Sholinbeck noted that if a class on the Library Workshops calendar is open, it will be placed on the Graduate Division's Professional Development (GradPro) calendar
K. Greenland will be taking over management of the Sciences Council workshop newsletter from L. Ngo
Collections Project Assistant Erica Newcome has created a "Which Map Are You?" quiz to introduce the geographic and historical map collections
Check in about the library's actions to address racism & social justice - All
Beth Dupuis' update of the Council charges was discussed and the group learned about current initiatives and brainstormed future actions
S. Teplitzky and Circulation/Reserves Supervisor Bonita Dyess are working with grad students in the Earth & Planetary Sciences Department to address DEI issues following a call to action issued by the students in June. They have joined the outreach/education subgroup; a LibGuide and a Zotero Library have been created with the object of highlighting the contributions of hidden voices/figures. B. Dyess created a Wikipedia page on tracking relevant topics and searching; an Edit-A-Thon may be organized.
L. Ngo suggested that Sciences Council look at how the concept of decolonizing collections could be applied to the sciences, and M. Sholinbeck shared Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein's "Decolonizing Science Reading List"
H. Muhr suggested examining the way the sciences have been used to promote racism and white supremacy (e.g., social darwinism, eugenics, etc.) as teaching moments about the history of our disciplines, along with highlighting scientists who have raised alarms and worked for social justice
S. Powell will create a shared document of DEI messages from departments and resources so that Sciences Council can track initiatives
Function Council, Committee Representative, & SILS reports
Sciences Council received an update from H. Muhr on issues relating to the harmonization of local data fields for the SILS project.
The SILS vanguard data migration is complete and testing will begin in September.
