Presentation: Highlights from talks with community users (Celia Emmelhainz)
Challenges for community users of campus libraries
finding library locations, especially subject specialty
unaware of services offered by campus libraries, including access to electronic resources and assistance from reference staff
not sure if they are welcome into library spaces... saw library spaces as student spaces.
Possible solutions
doing a way-finding assessment, better library signage
uniformed branding of brochures, similar to what the Business and Social Research libraries created
PSC members mentioned that it was important to make community users aware of what may be offered by local public libraries (business reference and other general resources not covered by the campus libraries; ILL options to borrow material from campus libraries)
PSC members are invited to provide feedback on draft publication.
Updates and announcements (All)
Trina Pundurs : UC's Shared Cataloging Program (SCP) currently sends electronic serials on print serials records, so the 856 is adding to the same record with print holdings (http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/record=b16157340), in the future all new serials will be on an electronic serials record and not merged with the print records. Older records will continue as is and there are no current plans to split print form electronic. One of the drivers for this change is that maintaining the merged records is labor intensive. There is no ETA for when SCP will make this change.
Trina Pundurs : Cataloging and Metadata Council is polling all library groups for topics that they wish to see addressed; you can suggest comments to Trina for CMC.
Hilary Schiraldi : The EZProxy implementation team is progressing as planned; recently contacted all people using the old proxy to encourage them to transition soon.
Dave Wong : The SenSource (people counters) installation is now complete across all our campus libraries.
Patrick Shannon : UC Systemwide Integrated Library System (SILS) request for proposal batch 3 requirements are coming soon for campus input. A link to the recording of the December 11 webinar hosted by the SILS Working Group is available (see January 16 email from Patrick)
Jutta Wiemhoff : NRLF Phase 4 update - construction company selected (XL Construction); Inventory Management System (IMS) request for proposals is being worked on by the implementation team; shelving installation company not selected (there are only two vendors who handle this type of shelving installation)
New projects, committees, and working groups (Beth)
Recap of the purpose of several newly announced library groups:
Digital Lifecycle Program Steering Committee
Digital Lifecycle Expertise Group
Dataverse Implementation Team (and Library Data Initiatives Plan)
Reference and Instruction Statistics Action Research Project (and LibInsights transition)
Public Computing Review - progress on recommendations (Beth)
In April 2018 Beth shared a document with the Library called "Public computing review: Recommendations and next steps" which outlined sixteen recommendations. Updates were provided for eight of those for which significant work has been done including: philosophy, prioritization, student laptops, Chromebooks, staff laptops, instruction spaces, mobile printing, and kiosks. Later this spring a more complete summary of the work accomplished will be shared with all library staff.
Also important is that, with Lead Team's encouragement, we are pausing working on the other areas in recognition that so many projects are happening in the library currently and these can take a little longer for us to address. These important areas can be picked up once we have hired the new AUL for Digital Initiatives and they can be part of the conversation. Areas include: assessment, microfilm/microfiche scanning, large monitors, software, maintenance, public service, technical support, and future.
