Providing Persistent Links
A persistent link (also called a permalink, durable link, or permanent link) is a direct and stable link to a specific online article or other online resource, which does not expire after your search session is over.
Why use persistent links?
The default URL that you see in the address bar of an online article or database record is often session-specific, which means it will expire after your session ends. If you plan to include links to Library-licensed online content in a document, website or bSpace site, it's often necessary to find and use a persistent link. Using a persistent link to point to a online article or other text is the recommended method of providing e-readings in bSpace, since uploading PDFs of copyrighted articles or book chapters to bSpace can conflict with our database licensing and with copyright law.
Who can access a persistent link?
These links are not accessible to the general public (an off-campus or unaffiliated user who clicks on a persistent link to a Library-licensed resource will be asked to authenticate with a CalNet ID).
Directions for creating persistent links
See below for step-by-step instructions for locating persistent links in a variety of Library-licensed databases containing articles, ebooks, and other resources.
