The Gardner (MAIN) Stacks collection houses materials in the social sciences and the humanities which supports the research of over fifty academic departments and programs. The Moffitt collection houses a core collection of materials whose primary purpose is to support undergraduate research.
At the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks and Moffitt Library circulation desks:
- Recall materials checked out to others
- Place searches for materials that are not on the shelf
- Request material from the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF).
UC ID or UCB library card must be presented to enter the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks or Moffitt Undergraduate Library. Members of the general public should consult the Access Policy for Gardner (MAIN) Stacks and Moffitt Undergraduate Library.
Loan periods
Materials from the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks and NRLF have loan periods that vary according to the type of material and the status of the borrower. Most books from the Moffitt Undergraduate Collection circulate for two weeks to all borrowers, except for course reserves which can be checked out only for shorter periods. Books and monographs from the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks, circulate to undergraduates and fee-card library users for one month, to graduate students for three months, and to UC Berkeley faculty for one year. Most periodicals from the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks circulate for one week to all borrowers.
When materials are checked out, a due date is stamped in the back of the book that indicates the length of the loan period. If a title is recalled by another library user before the original due date, the borrower having the item will be notified by e-mail informing them that the item is now due within seven days.
Returns
Books and other library materials must be returned to the library from which they were checked out. Materials should be returned to the circulation desks during hours the library is open, and to outdoor book returns when the library is closed. Book returns are located to the right of the front door of Moffitt Library, to the right of the south entrance to Doe Library and on the north side of Doe library at the far left of the plaza.
Recalls
Items checked out to one borrower may be recalled by another borrower. Recalled items must be returned to the library within one week. To recall an item, present your library card and the title or call number of the item you need at either of the Doe & Moffitt circulation desks. You will be notified by postcard or e-mail when the item is available to be picked up.
Searches
Items not found on the shelf in the Gardner (MAIN) Stacks or Moffitt Library may have a search request placed for them. To request a search, present the title or call number of the item at either Doe & Moffitt circulation desk. When the item is located, you will be notified by postcard or e-mail.
Overdue material
Library users with overdue material will have borrowing privileges blocked until the items are returned or fees are paid. Replacement and processing fees are charged for overdue materials that are not returned. The University Campus Accounts and Receivables Office adds additional late fee to unpaid bills every 30 days a delinquent account goes unpaid. Unpaid bills are forwarded to a collection agency. Questions about bills and blocked or revoked privileges should be directed to the Privileges Desk (Doe Library, Floor 1).
