Archival Collections and Primary Sources

Resources that list, or provide access to, materials typically found in archives and used for primary source research. Examples include manuscripts, diaries, letters, first-hand accounts or documentary sources on a subject, person, event or issue.

  • Microform Resources

African American Microform Collections
Link to a list of UC Berkeley's Library sizable holdings of important microfilm and microfiche editions of archival materials in the field, including personal papers of prominent African American figures, some 200 newspapers, the records of organizations such as the NAACP and CORE, as well as a wide range of other materials. Materials are housed in the microform reading room, 40 Doe Library.

Caribbean Microform Collections (PDF)
Caribbean microform collections owned by the Berkeley libraries emphasize archival materials from the British colonial period (1625-1970s), with a focus on the topics of trade and slavery.  Additional materials in microfilm concentrate on 20th century politics and culture in Haiti, and the women's movement in Cuba. Materials are housed in the microform reading room, 40 Doe Library.

NYPL Digital Schomburg: Images of African Americans from the 19th Century:
A searchable database containing tens of thousands of images in the NYPL collections, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, rare prints and photographs, and much more.

Voices from the Days of Slavery
Available from the Library of Congress, these recorded interview took place between 1932 and 1975 in nine Southern states. Twenty-three interviewees, born between 1823 and the early 1860s, discuss how they felt about slavery, slaveholders, coercion of slaves, their families, and freedom.
