About this Guide

Guide to resources in Mechanical Engineering.

Find Articles

The databases listed below include journal articles, technical reports, and conference papers in the subject areas of mechanical engineering. Use UC-eLinks to link out to full text when available.

For a full list of article databases, see our Article Databases page.

Access

On campus wireless access use: Airbears 2: wireless access on campus.

Off-campus access to many resources is limited to current UCB faculty, staff and students.
To access these resources from off-campus, please use one of the following:

Proxy Server
The proxy server is a computer on campus that will re-route your requests for licensed resources after authenticating you as a Berkeley student, faculty or staff member. You must configure your web browser in order to use it.

Proxy changes: Recent changes in the proxy server may have affected some users; see the Library's Proxy Server FAQ. iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch proxy server setup instructions.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)
The VPN is a software program that will establish a "tunnel" to our campus network, allowing you to access a broader variety of licensed resources.

Find Electronic Journals

Find out which mechanical engineering journals titles we have online by using our E-journals A-Z database.

Search for journal title:

Or, see the full list of e-journals for mechanical engineering.

Citation Linker

If you have a citation, use the UC-eLinks Citation Linker to find the full-text.

ucelinks citation linker

Journal Title and Date are required fields.  Enter as much information as you have about the publication.

Find books and e-books

Numerous books are available electronically for use at UCB. Some are included in publisher packages or as special subject collections. See the Bioscience Library's Electronic Books page for full-text collections such as ENVIRONnetBASE, Springer E-books, ebrary, and Knovel Library.

Use OskiCat (UCB) to find books, ebooks, journals, conference proceedings, videos and more.

In OskiCat you can:
Request
items checked out by another patron or held in storage
Renew
your checked-out items online.|
Limit your search to "Available Online" for ebooks only.

Journals: When searching on exact journal titles, change the search field to Title and limit the search to Journals/Magazines/Newspapers.

For materials not owned by UC Berkeley: Borrowing from Other Libraries.

Use Melvyl (UC) catalog to search the libraries of all UC campuses.

Dissertations & Theses

Dissertations and Theses (Dissertation Abstracts)
Dates: 1861 - present
Coverage: Indexes graduate dissertations from over 1,000 North American, and selected European, graduate schools and universities. Dissertations published since 1980, and master's theses since 1988, include brief abstracts written by the authors. Offers full text of most of the dissertations added since 1997.
Search by: thesis advisor, topic or title term, author, and other fields.

UC Berkeley Dissertations
To search for UC dissertations, go to Dissertations and Theses @ University of California (available in full text).

To locate dissertations from a specific UC Berkeley department, search OskiCat for the keywords berkeley dissertations <department name>.

Example: berkeley dissertations molecular and cell biology

Materials Properties & Selection

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
Comprehensive and indespensable handbook for scientists and engineers.

ASM Alloy Phase Diagram Center
Provides access to an extensive collection of binary and ternary phase diagrams and associated data.

ASM Handbooks
Covers metals as well as engineered materials such as composites, ceramics, and plastics.

CINDAS Microelectronics Packaging Materials Database
Contains data on thermal, mechanical, electrical, and physical properties of electronics packaging materials.

CINDAS Thermophysical Properties of Matter Database
Contains thermophysical properties of over 5,000 materials with approximately 50,000 data curves.

Material ConneXion
Contains material descriptions, usage characteristics, manufacturer and distributor information for over 7,000 advanced, innovative, and sustainable materials for engineering and design.

Citation Management Tools

Reference managers help you manage your research, collect and cite sources, & create bibliographies in a variety of citation styles.  Compare.

Widely used citation managers include:

RefWorks
: Free for UC Berkeley users. Web-based manager with direct export integrated into many databases. Organize and share references, and format citations and bibliographies.
Sign up for a RefWorks account.
Getting Started with RefWorks

EndNote
: may be purchased from UC Berkeley's Software Central. Good PDF management and annotation tools. Automatically searches for full-text PDFs (if available) for citations. Formats citations and bibliographies. Requires purchase of annual or semi-annual upgrades to remain current.

Zotero
: Free plug-in for Firefox and standalone versions for Chrome and Internet Explorer. Automatically extracts metadata from many PDFs and web pages. Permits tagging, notation, and full text searching of your library of resources. Integrates with Word for citation and bibliography formatting, and has a free (but limited) web backup service.Getting Started with Zotero Note: When using software to automatically format your citations, double-check the formatting for correctness.

Mendeley
: Free (up to 2GB). Web-based component that syncs with a desktop client. Integrates with Word for citation and bibliography formatting. Includes some social elements that allows for sharing and recommendations.

Style Guides

Publishers' style guides provide instructions for writing an article for one of its publications.  They typically specify the layout and length of the paper, rules for units, graphs and tables, copyright terms, and how to submit the paper.
