Connecting From Off Campus

UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff can access Library resources from off campus using one of two simple methods:

Proxy Server
After you make a one-time change in your web browser settings, the proxy server will ask you to log in with a CalNet ID or Library PIN when you click on the link to a licensed resource. See the setup instructions, FAQ, and Troubleshooting pages to configure your browser.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)
After you install and run the VPN "client" software on your computer, you can log in with a CalNet ID to establish a secure connection with the campus network.

About the Rhetoric Collection

Rhetoric materials are collected in support of the research and teaching needs of those in the Rhetoric Department and in related interdisciplinary fields. Rhetoric at Berkeley is an interdisciplinary program that explores the theoretical, historical and cultural dimensions of discourse. Undergraduate coursework focuses on the History and Theory of Rhetoric, Public Discourse, and Narrative and Image. Graduate study is concentrated on Classical Rhetoric and Ancient Culture, Continental Philosophy and Critical Theory, Film and Media Studies, Gender and Sexuality, History and Theory, Law, Literary and Cultural Studies, Political and Social Thought, and Race and Ethnicity.

Article Databases

For comprehensive lists of article databases, rhetoric students should use the Electronic Resource Finder and search by the broad Subject category (e.g. Law and Legal Studies) that most closely relates to their research interests. Below is a selective list of databases that are particularly useful for interdisciplinary topics related to rhetoric.

These databases index journal articles, chapters of books, (and sometimes) books, and book reviews. You can research a topic by searching for authors or subject terms relevant to your research. A few of these databases include the full text of the articles, but most of them use UC-eLinks to take you to the full-text of the article you are interested in. For articles not available online, UC-eLinks will search the Melvyl catalog for a print copy of the journal.
