This research guide for Master of Engineering students is designed to help you find resources for your capstone projects. It is by no means an exhaustive list of everything the library has available. Due to the specialized nature of each group's projects, we recommend that groups make appointments with librarians if they are not finding what they need with the resources listed.

Off-campus Access

To access UCB Library resources from off campus, configure your machine using one of two simple methods (Proxy Server is the quickest and easiest):

Proxy Server
After you make a one-time change in your web browser settings, the proxy server will ask you to log in with a CalNet ID when you click on the link to a licensed resource. See the setup instructions, FAQ, and Troubleshooting pages to configure your browser. Follow these steps to check your proxy configuration.

VPN (Virtual Private Network)
After you install and run the VPN client software on your computer, you can log in with a CalNet ID to establish a secure connection with the campus network.

Find Patents

A US patent is a property right granted to an inventor "to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling" the invention in the United States or "importing" the invention into the United States for a period of 20 years from the date of application. (USPTO)

United States Patents

Google Patent Search
US patents from 1790 to the present, excludes patents issued in the most recent months and published applications. Keyword and advanced searches. PDFs of documents.

United States Patent and Trademark Office
US patents from 1790 to present; published applications 2001 to present. Keyword and advanced searches from 1976 to present; prior to 1976, search by number, date and classification only. TIFF Viewer required to view or print patents.

International Patents

European Patent Office - 1836 to present for ~180 countries

Patent Lens
Search data from the World Intellectual Property Organization, European Patent Office, U.S. Patent Office, and the Australian Patent Office.

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) - A special United Nations agency formed in 1967 "to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world through cooperation among the states." Search international patent applications.

Free Patents Online - Fun for its lists of patents in various areas, including Crazy Patents

Finding E-books

OskiCat: Find ebooks in the OskiCat catalog by changing the drop-down menu that defaults to Entire Collection to Available Online.

Full text searches of publisher collections of e-books like Safari Tech Books and Springer e-books can be done by searching the publisher's native interface. See a list of Berkeley subscribed publisher packages here.

Citation Management Tools

Citation management tools help you manage your research, collect and cite sources, and create bibliographies in a variety of citation styles. Each one has its strengths and weaknesses, but any are easier than doing it by hand!

RefWorks - free for UC Berkeley users. It allows you to create your own database by importing references and using them for footnotes and bibliographies. Use the RefWorks New User Form to sign up.

Introduction to RefWorks handout (from October 12, 2012 class)

EndNote: may be purchased from UC Berkeley's Software Central.Supports many citations styles in science and engineering.

Zotero: A free plug-in that works exclusively with the Firefox browser: keeps copies of what you find on the web, permits tagging, notation, full text searching of your library of resources, works with Word, and has a free web backup service.

It's always good to double check the formatting -- sometimes the software doesn't get it quite right.
