Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to continue the long-term monitoring
of ·Warm Springs Marsh (also known as Coyote Creek Lagoon) - a restored
marsh in south San Francisco Bay. Warm Springs, located at the southern
end of San Francisco Bay in Alameda County, is a 220-acre tidal
restoration site excavated as a deep borrow pit. It was opened to
tidal action in October 1986 and relies on natural deposition of
sediment to convert the sub-tidal habitat into a fully developed
inter-tidal marsh. This project is part of a long-term monitoring
program instituted at the following three San Francisco Bay tidal
marshes: Warm Springs; China Camp; and Muzzi.
This program was initiated in 1986
with a succession of grants from the San Francisco Foundation
and the Marin Community Foundation, which were initially
awarded to Save San Francisco Bay Associates (SSBA) and subsequently
to The Bay Institute (TBI) and Bay Model Association (BMA).
During the period of 1990 through 1992, funds were provided by King
and Lyons Development, Inc. and the Marin Audubon Society
to support monitoring efforts at Warm Springs and China Camp Marshes.
The Fred Gellert Foundation also provided funds in 2002 and
2003.
