This is a brief and selective guide to materials available in the Environmental Design Library, and includes basic research tools, historical sources, and strategies for finding materials in the UC Berkeley Libraries. The Anthropology Library, East Asian Library, Ethnic Studies Library, South/Southeast Asia Library, Center for Chinese Studies Library, and Doe and Moffitt Libraries also have relevant materials.
Only selected general materials are listed here; in fact, specific sources are generally excluded from this guide. Terms related to a particular building material (e.g. straw, adobe), a stylistic term (e.g. Shaker, Safavid), or cultural descriptor (e.g. nomads, Haida) will lead to additional worthwhile material, even when the main focus is not architecture per se, and should be searched as well.
Vernacular architecture and landscape architecture, often called the "ordinary" or "traditional" built environment, is a subject which crosses many disciplines: architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, building science, cultural anthropology, urban geography, archaeology, material culture, history, folklore, gender studies and human geography among them. As a result, information about vernacular architecture can be found in a variety of libraries and resources on campus.
Revised and updated May 2010 by Stephanie Walls, Reference Intern. Compiled by Claire Dannenbaum, Reference Intern, and Elizabeth Byrne.
Books in this section are examples of materials that provide guidance on the methods, principles and procedures of studying vernacular architecture. They discuss ways to analyze vernacular architecture and the built environment including cultural and sociological aspects and influences. For a broader scope, see the Methodology section of the Environmental Design Library Guide: History of Architecture.

Use these selected Library of Congress subject headings as broad examples of subjects or keywords that can be used to find books in the Library catalogs and to find articles in periodical indexes. Using specific terms about the type of construction material (e.g., bamboo, clay) or the geographic location (e.g., Iran, Philippines) and combining subject headings can help refine your search for more exact results. Make note of additional subject and keywords in resources you find helpful.
Also consult the Browser’s Guide to Architecture for tips on how to browse the library’s physical collection in the stacks.
It is also useful to frame your search around related subjects , for example, terms related to a particular building material (e.g. straw, adobe, fabric), style (e.g. Shaker, Safavid), or cultural descriptor (e.g. nomads, Haida, squatters).
Because vernacular architecture encompasses such a broad and diverse domain of varied disciplines, places and time periods, consider beginning topical research with dictionaries and encyclopedias. They provide overviews of styles, cultures or places and often list pertinent scholars or provide extensive bibliographies on specific topics. Also, look here for common versus preferred names for keyword search terms to enhance your searches in the library's catalog and journal databases. These selected resources are listed under two categories: vernacular architecture and the built environment, and geography and cultures.
For more information beyond these resources, try also searching under the name of specific building types, countries, locations or cultures in general dictionaries and encyclopedias of architecture: Architecture Reference Sources, Dictionaries or Architecture Reference Sources, Encyclopedias or Anthropology Library Encyclopedias and Dictionaries.

This is a selective list of collective bibliographies. For more, check library catalogs under keywords: vernacular architecture bibliography or subject: Vernacular architecture--bibliography or try a combination of other subject headings from the list in this guide. For bibliographies on the vernacular architecture of a specific place, check library catalogs under subject: Vernacular architecture--(name of place)--bibliography.
