Giving to the library

The Earth Sciences & Map Library welcomes gifts in all forms. Many private donors have made contributions toward the acquisition of research materials for the use of Berkeley faculty and students. This support is very important in sustaining the excellence of our collections and services.

The following methods of giving are available:

Cash Gifts
Financial support provides funding for maps, books, online resources, specialized equipment, or special projects. Gifts may be unrestricted or support a specific library program or collection. Contributions of any amount are welcome.

Memorial Gifts and Gifts in Honor of a Person or Event
Contributions given in memory or in honor of a person or to mark a special occasion such as a graduation are recognized with a bookplate. A named book or map fund can be established for a gift of $1,000 or more.

Endowments
Endowment funds may be established with a gift of $50,000 or more. These funds provide the library with an annual income in perpetuity and have a lasting impact on maintaining a world class collection in geography and earth sciences. The University invests its endowments carefully to achieve a healthy rate of return that provides for both current needs and long-term growth. A special book plate will be created and placed in each book.

Donating Maps and Books
Gifts of scholarly materials and the results of research have historically represented a significant element in the development of our outstanding research collections. We welcome individual gifts of maps, books, and collections, but due to space and staff limitations, we must be judicious in accepting large contributions. Contact Brian Quigley about the materials you wish to donate.

Donors should be aware that the materials offered may be duplicates or outside the scope of the collection. In these cases, the materials may be sold and the proceeds used to purchase other materials for the collections.

Contribute Online or By Mail
Make a donation directly to the library using the online form. In the Special instructions or designations for this gift section, specify that it is for the Earth Sciences and Map Library.
